Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect at my new patient exam?
Your first visit at Headwaters Dental Studio is all about understanding you, not rushing you through a checklist.

We’ll begin with a thorough review of your dental and health history, followed by digital X-rays (if needed) and a comprehensive exam. Dr. McCollum will evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health, then walk you through any findings in clear, easy-to-understand terms.
If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain your options, answer your questions, and help you decide on a plan that fits your goals, timeline, and budget. No pressure. No surprises. Just honest guidance.

After your evaluation you will be able to set up your initial cleaning appointment (typically not the same day) along with any other appointments discussed in your treatment plan.

Fluoride: what’s the good, and what’s the bad?
The good:
Fluoride helps remineralize teeth, making them more resistant to decay. It can be especially beneficial for children (poor Oral hygiene and a High Cavity Risk) , patients with a history of cavities (High Cavity risk), dry mouth (High Cavity risk), and patients with recession (high cavity risk).

The considerations:
Fluoride isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Some patients prefer to limit fluoride exposure or may not need additional fluoride based on their cavity risk level. We understand your concern to not blindly use fluoride as a fix it all and only recommend it to individuals with signs of higher risk.

At Headwaters Dental Studio, fluoride is always recommended thoughtfully—not automatically. We’ll discuss your individual risk and let you decide what feels right for you and your family.
How much will my visit cost?
We believe cost should never be a mystery.

Before any treatment is started, our team will review fees, insurance estimates*, and payment options with you. Preventive visits are often partially or fully covered by insurance, but coverage varies from plan to plan.

If you ever have questions about cost, just ask—we’re happy to walk through it with you.

*Insurance coverage is the patient's responsibility. We do our best to send out pre-authorizations for best estimates, however it is the patients responsibility to manage their private dental insurance benefits.

Do you take my insurance? What does my insurance cover?
We work with most major dental insurance plans and are happy to help you understand your benefits.

That said, dental insurance can be confusing. Coverage is determined by your plan, not your dentist, and benefits vary widely. Insurance typically helps with preventive care and may partially cover other treatments, but it rarely covers everything.

Our role is to help you maximize your benefits while focusing on what’s best for your oral health. We’ll submit claims on your behalf and explain coverage estimates to the best of our ability, but treatment decisions are always based on clinical need, not insurance limitations.
